Street lights in Lichfield and Burntwood are to be upgraded to use less energy and save money.
Staffordshire County Council is planning to replace around 47,000 conventional bulbs with LED lighting after taking out an interest-free loan to fund the project.
The money will be repaid by the estimated £1.6 million-a-year savings from using less energy.
Cllr David Williams, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said:
“This scheme literally pays for itself and then continues to cost taxpayers less for 25 years.
“The lights will meet relevant safety standards and by using less energy it’s another example of how the county council is reducing our carbon footprint, as well as saving money.”
