Four people have been taken to hospital after a crash on the A38 near Lichfield.
The mutliple-vehicle accident took place on the northbound carriageway near Barton at around 12.15pm this afternoon (December 3) and led to the closure of the road.
The Midlands Air Ambulance and helicopters from Warwickshire and Northamptonshire were dispatched to the scene.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said:
“On arrival at the scene crews found two lorries and four cars that had been in collision. Two occupants from one of the cars were seriously injured. The car which was located in between the two lorries at the time of the incident has suffered substantial damage. Both driver and passenger of the vehicle were trapped in the car for approximately 40 minutes.
“The driver of the car, a man believed to be in his 50’s, was treated at the scene for a suspected chest injury before being airlifted to Royal Derby Hospital.
“The passenger of the vehicle, a woman believed to be of similar age, had suffered a serious head injury and suspected internal injuries. She was treated on scene before being airlifted to University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire for further assessment and treatment.
“The driver of one of the lorries, a man believed to be in his 50’s, was treated on scene for minor injuries before being taken via land ambulance to Queens Hospital Burton. The driver of another car involved in the incident, a man believed to be in his 40’s, was also treated at the scene for minor injuries and conveyed to the same hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
