Volunteers have been out in force to help develop a new cricket ground near Lichfield.
Players and supporters were joined by famous faces to help build the new Whittington Cricket Club base on Saturday (March 19).
Dennis Amiss joined international cricketer Danielle Wyatt and Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant to lend a hand with the project.
Dennis, who is the club’s patron, as well as the England Cricket Board’s deputy chairman said:
“To see a community come together as much as it did at Whittington is a very positive thing for cricket as a whole and I hope that people take their efforts further and continue to help out.”
Volunteers helped paint picket fences around the ground, collect stones from the outfield, work on the nets and sightscreens, and put up benches.
Mr Fabricant said:
“This was the Big Society in action with the whole community pitching in. When the ground and cricket pavilion are completed, it will be a real asset to the village of Whittington. I was proud to play a small part in the work.”
The new facility will replace the club’s previous home at Bit End Field. The project has been funded largely by grants from the ECB and their own fundraising. efforts.
Whittington Cricket Club are also asking residents to comment on their application for Section 106 funding to complete the pavilion.
