People across Staffordshire are being warned to remain vigilant after an increase in reports of cold callers pretending to be police officers.
The mobile phone scam sees the caller say they are a sergeant from the Metropolitan Police and that the person they are ringing has been the victim of financial fraud.
They are then asked to provide bank details or to transfer money in order to be safe from further thefts.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said:
“We would like to reiterate that members of the public will never be asked by officers to provide bank details or transfer funds over the phone.
“If you receive a call like this, you are advised to hang-up and contact the relevant neighbourhood policing team which the caller is stating to be working in.”
