WHITTINGTON suffered a disappointing home defeat against Penn.
The hosts won the toss and opted to bat first – only to see Alec Spooner fall to a duck with the second ball of the innings.
Shazad Malik and Euan Hammond followed to leave Whittington teetering on 28-3.
The innings struggled for partnerships and things looked bleak with the score on 99-9, but tail-ender Faizanullah Niazai stepped up to the plate to hit 42 from 27 balls before he became the final man out with the score on 137.
The total was an achievable one for the visitors, but Whittington gave them an early warning when Abdulwafi Safi removed opener Vivneet Jangle for a duck with the third ball of the Penn innings.
Nikhil Jassal did the damage with the bat though as he struck 47 before being caught by Tanvir Ahmed Jibul off the bowling of Shamimur Rahman as the visitors moved to 78-3.
Safi caught and bowled Talha Tarique to give Whittington a glimpse of a comeback on 81-4 – but it was to be the last wicket to fall as Penn eased past the total with six wickets in hand.
