Lichfield residents are set to benefit from a newly landscaped area which offers impressive views of the city’s Cathedral.
Fradley-based firm Beautiful Gardens have almost completed the work at Stowecroft, which has included moving 150 tons of soil, 30 oak logs and 60 sandstone boulders.
The site will remain closed to the public while grass seed germinates on the soon-to-be grassy mounds but is set to be officially opened in May.
The area, located just off Netherstowe, was purported to have been a tip in the 1950s and, since then, has been levelled and left as an open grassy area.
Simon Roberts, managing director of Beautiful Gardens, said: “The area has been transformed from a flat and uninteresting space to one of inspiration and reflection to be enjoyed by people of all ages. All the materials were sourced locally and will last for many generations.
“The 13 semi-mature trees planted through the area include, Beech, Horse Chestnut, Silver Birch and Scots Pines and also offer a lasting legacy.
“Come the spring adults will be able to relax and take in the impressive views of the Cathedral while younger people can use it as an interesting mini assault course.”
The improvements have been designed to sit next to colourful wooden tree trunks which have been painted by local young people as part of a Lichfield District Council project.
Hayley Sheldon, Secretary of the North Lichfield Initiative which funded the initiative using a development grant, said: “We‘re really pleased with the way the area has been transformed.
“We think it will encourage more people to cycle and walk into Lichfield and the design will enable children to follow an interesting trail as they travel into school or into the city centre.”
