Another one bites the dust

Published:

A trip to the Lichfield is starting to become a little bit of a spot the closing down sale contest.

Ponden Mill is the latest store to throw in the towel and there doesn’t appear to be many signs that other outlets will be stepping in to fill the void.

The disappearance of this store adds to the loss of Post Office and Happit which have already left holes in the top end of town. When added to Woolworths and some of the Tudor Row shops, the shopping scene doesn’t look great.

Winning new stores back to these vacant spots is going to be tough and it’s likely that Lichfield’s shopping will ever return to the old format – something which makes the Friarsgate development even more of a puzzle.

After all, if we can’t fill the current holes in our shopping landscape, what hope do we have once a new development is built?
