A decision to ban election posters from lamposts in Lichfield and Burntwood has been branded “undemocratic” by a councillor.
Cllr Steve Norman (Lab, Summerfield) made his comments after a decision by Staffordshire County Council to prevent any political adverts from going up in the region.
The zer0-tolerance stance was announced by Staffordshire County Council Leader Philip Atkins, but Cllr Norman has called for the decision to be reviewed. He explained:
“It’s undemocratic because it puts smaller parties like the Greens and even the Liberal Democrats at a disadvantage as they have fewer volunteers to help with leafleting. A good poster display – taken down within the three weeks prescribed by law of course – can make up for this to some degree.”
The decision has also been questioned by Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant.
Writing on his Twitter account, the Conservative MP said:
“Disappointed that for the 1st time, we are not allowed to put posters up on lampposts in LichVegas thru the election. We always win at that!”
