The first Burntwood RUFC seniors’ action on the main pitch since before Christmas took place under floodlights on Wednesday night.
It was the Veterans who featured and Mark Bourne’s side emerged winners, making the game safe with a late try from assistant club coach Jimmy Davies.
After the initial testing out period, centre Rob England broke free before feeding winger Chris Black who raced round behind the posts for the opening try, converted by Craig Addy.
Ashby were solid up front and put some good handling moves together, one of which led to a well-taken try in the right corner.
The visitors were guilty of slowing/killing the ball at the breakdown which cost them several penalties – even rolling away can be a chore for elderly players!
Addy converted two penalty kicks before half time to put his side 13-5 up.
The second half was evenly contested with both sides making grateful use of their available replacements. The potent centre pairing of Matt Bray and England were well shackled by a tight visitors’ defence.
It was not until the closing minutes that Davies sped to the right corner for the try which sealed the game to end a well-fought, sporting encounter.
Hopefully, Burntwood vets can make the return trip, if not this season then certainly next.
