PLANS to improve a local canal towpath have been welcomed – but locals say more still needs to be done.
Lichfield District Council has agreed to a £42,000 investment in Fradley.
The money will be used to carry out canal towpath improvements and works to repair the embankment between Fradley Junction and the New Bridge on Gorse Lane.
Cathy Dobbs, who spearheaded a campaign to improve the towpath, said:
“When it’s wet or icy the towpath at Fradley is a muddy hazard and is inaccessible, especially to anyone with a pushchair or wheelchair.
“Receiving £42,000 is a good start, but Fradley residents will still struggle to use the towpath all year round.
“When towpaths are properly maintained, the canal network offers leisure opportunities for everyone.”
Glen Bown, Labour candidate for the Alrewas and Fradley by-election, said that while the improvements were welcome, he was keen to lobby for further money to enhance local waterways.
He said:
“Our canals are a vital part of the identity of Alrewas and Fradley – and they deserve proper care.
“Too often, developer contributions are left untouched. I was happy to put pressure on Lichfield District Council to investigate.
“I am delighted that the Canal and River Trust will now get funding to improve the towpath.
“I plan to continue lobbying for further investment to ensure the canals – and their towpaths – are accessible and enjoyable for all.”
