A PROJECT is helping women fleeing domestic abuse to support the literacy skills of their children.
Pathway Project has partnered with the local branch of the Soroptimists and Refuge
in Literacy for the scheme.
The charity said that national data showed that children living in a refuge can often experience lower education attainment.
A spokesperson said:
“We knew we had to do something to change this – so this wonderful partnership was born.
“We have joined forces with the Soroptomists and Refuge in Literacy to launch an uplifting, innovative programme giving mums simple, confidence-building tools to support their children’s reading from birth.
“These small, everyday literacy routines help mothers reconnect with their children, rebuild nurturing moments, and create a comforting sense of normality and closeness.
“The local Soroptimists offered invaluable support, providing dedicated volunteers who work one-to-one with the women in our refuge. Their warmth, time, and encouragement made a remarkable difference – and the outcomes truly moved us.”
People are being invited to support the initiative by donating book parcels and tokens, or by volunteering to support mothers to use literacy tools with their children.
