THE closure of squash facilities in Lichfield is “regrettable” a local club has said.
The two courts at Friary Grange Leisure Centre have now closed for public use as part of the switch to the new Lichfield Leisure Centre at Stychbrook Park.
But the new facility does not have provision for squash, meaning the only remaining location for players in Lichfield is at King Edward VI School.
A spokesperson for Lichfield Squash Club said the closure of the courts has come at a time when the sport is thriving.
“In its heyday, Friary boasted four courts, with two being repurposed around 15 years ago – during the 1980s and 1990s you had to physically queue to book a court.
“Squash activity in Lichfield gradually began to migrate over to the new courts at King Edward VI School, as these are glass back courts with better lighting and heating.
“Although usage at The Friary has dwindled over recent years, the loss of squash courts in Lichfield is regrettable, especially as the club has grown participation and continues to build on this, meaning that one day the two remaining courts at King Edward VI School will prove insufficient.
“The club did offer to run the courts at The Friary on behalf of the school, similar to the way we work with King Edward VI School, but The Friary School is looking to repurpose the spaces.
“We hope that the club continues to build squash participation so that a good case can be made to add on some courts to the new leisure centre.”
