A COLLECTION of rare Commonwealth stamps are being sold by a Lichfield auctioneer.
Dating back to the 1920s, the archive is expected to fetch around £1,700 when it goes under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers in a timed sale running from 4th to 15th July.
The stamps include four King Edward VII high value Straits Settlements overprinted specimen stamps of $500, $100 and two $25 in different designs.
They were overprinted with ‘specimen’ so they could either be sold to collectors at the time or sent to other countries so those postal services would know what the stamps looked like.
Expert Phil Ives said:
“These are rare stamps in good condition – they are really hard to get hold of.”
The sale also includes a 1922 Kedah 25 cent inverted overprinted Malaya Borneo Exhibition stamp with certificate.
Mr Ives added:
“Further highlights include a 1925 North Borneo stamps set less couple of minor values and two Malayan States Jahore $100 and $50.
“This is an impressive collection with some really hard to find sets and individuals.”
Other countries featured include Gibraltar, Australia, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco Agencies, Malta and Sarawak.
The stamps are being put into auction by a seller from Burntwood after their father had put the collection together.
The auction begins online from 5pm on 4th July.
A huge football collection including thousands of programmes, sticker albums, souvenirs, scarves, annuals and autobiographies can also be found in the same sale.
