Shoppers and businesses hit by the temporary closure of a city centre car park in Lichfield have been reassured that the disruption will be “worth it in the long run”.
The Bird Street facility closed for three days on Monday and will be shut once again on April 27 and 28 for resurfacing work to be carried out.
Some nearby business owners have complained of a lack of shoppers, despite Lichfield District Council advising visitors to utilise other car parks, including the new Friary multi-storey.
But Richard King, the local authority’s strategic director for democratic, development and legal services, insisted the disruption could not be avoided.
He said: “Bird Street is a really popular car park and gets lots of wear and tear, so needs to be resurfaced. We’ve tried to time the works so they will have the least disruption for visitors and traders, and while we apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause, we are confident it will be worth it in the long run.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience.”
