Councillors have been warned that any delays to the Friarsgate development will leave a major question mark over a multi-storey car park in Lichfield.
The facility was given a makeover in November 2010 after concerns over its structure.
But a report to Lichfield District Council over car parking provision in the city has warned that life of the multi-storey would be called into question if the long-awaited city centre redevelopment scheme was pushed back any further.
“If the Friarsgate project is delayed beyond its current planned schedule, detailed consideration will need to be given to the future of the Levetts Field multi-storey car park,” the report explained.
“Significant works were carried out to that car park in 2010 to extend its life, but these were done with the aim of providing an additional five years of operation.
“As the car park reopened in November 2010, the end of this planned extension is already upon us.”
The report stressed that while there were not any immediate concerns about the car park, the long-term considerations needed to be examined.
It continued: “While there is no immediate threat to the safety of the structure, even a medium term life extension would require substantial capital investment.”
