Drivers using their mobile phones while on the road in Lichfield are being targeted in a new police crackdown.
Police are planning a high profile, two-day crackdown in the city as part of a spring road safety offensive.
Drivers caught using hand held telephones while at the wheel face an instant £60 fine and three points on their licence.
The crackdown starts tomorrow (May 27) and will see police officers patrolling roads across the city supported by neighbourhood community support officers.
The move follows growing concern that some drivers are ignoring the law which bans the use of hand help telephones while on the move.
PC Ed Ford explained:
“There have been some extremely tragic incidents caused by drivers using telephones. Drivers cannot pay full attention to what is happening in front of them while balancing a telephone, a steering wheel and the car’s controls.”
Four years ago, two teenage girls were killed on the A38 near Burton when the car in which they were passengers was hit by a lorry the driver of which was using his mobile phone.
