AN event in Lichfield is showcasing the best of Fairtrade Wines.
The tasting experience, supported by Central Co-op, is taking place at the Guildhall between 7pm and 9pm on 10th November.
Cllr Rosie Harvey-Coggins said the evening would be a chance to sample a range of tipples:
"Everyone has heard about Fairtrade tea and coffee, but the idea of Fairtrade wine may be new to some.
"The quality of these wines, mainly from South Africa and from South America, has improved dramatically over the years – and the Co-op has an amazing selection.
"With the help of the Co-op we’ve picked out five of the best, and we’ll be introducing them together with some background of the individual wines.
"Whatever your taste in wine, we are sure there’ll be something for you."
The Revd Ian Hayter, who helped found Lichfield Fairtrade alongside Cllr Harvey-Coggins and Cllr Hugh Ashton, said:
"This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Fairtrade movement, as well as learning about the wines themselves. It’s an event which promises to be enjoyable as well as being educational.
"We’re offering a welcome drink as well as five different wines for tasting, together with some nibbles."
Cllr Ashton added:
"The Fairtrade movement is about more than just giving the producers a fair price for their produce. By purchasing Fairtrade products, you are also promoting fairness as a concept.
"You are helping the communities in which these producers live, with Fairtrade Premium social initiatives for schools or climate-related projects, and also promoting gender equality, ensuring the women in these communities are rewarded fairly for their work.
"We expect to be able to contribute our profits to an overseas Fairtrade project – and we have been talking about this with Whittington Fairtrade who are sponsoring such a project."
Tickets are £12.50 and can be purchased at lichfield-fairtrade.org.uk/wine-event.
