A new statue celebrating Burntwood’s mining history has been unveiled.
Hundreds of people turned out to see the covers come off SCAMP for the first time.
The statue, featuring a miner with his pit pony, has taken pride of place at Sankeys Corner.
The crowd were entertained by the sounds of the Rugeley Power Station Brass Band before getting a first glimpse of the new addition to the town’s mining past.
The cheers rang out as the velvet green covers slipped off the plinth, giving them a first look at the iconic image.
They were told that SCAMP – which was created by local sculptor Peter Walker – was a “gift to the people of Burntwood”.
Young visitors were also reminded about the harsh conditions young miners would have faced in the local pits in years gone by.
