A new memorial to the men who took part in a daring World War Two raid in Nazi-occupied Europe is set to be unveiled.
The National Memorial Arboretum will remember the so-called Cockleshell Heroes.
Operation Frankton, as it was officially known, saw troops raid a harbour complex in Bordeaux in 1942. The mission left one ship damaged and another four damaged, while the harbour was also put out of action for several months.
Their nickname came from the ‘cockle’ canoes used as part of the raid from the submarine HMS Tuna and the story of their daring raid was turned into a 1955 film.
Now the Cockleshell Heroes memorial and plaques will be dedicated in a service at 1pm on Saturday (April 25) at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.
