LICHFIELD had to show real grit and purpose once more to secure the victory over Newent.
The Myrtle Greens started slowly, with three early handling errors costing them valuable territory and points.
Newent opened the scoring after less than ten minutes when hooker Ethan Allen spun off
an advancing maul up the unpopulated blindside for a comfortable try. The league’s second highest points scorer Tom Webb easily converted it – and soon added a couple of penalties.
Kieran Reynolds managed to find a response from his team, and it was he who scored from
close range after a series of forward drives. Charlie Milner converted before registering a
straight penalty to bring it back to 13-10 at the break.
Lichfield started to dominate territory as Milner hit a post with a penalty before he tied up the scores.
Webb put his side in front again with a penalty – his only success after his early accuracy.
The Myrtle Greens had a nudge on at the scrum all afternoon and when they were awarded a penalty near the posts, Reynolds elected for one rather than a kick at goal. Lichfield headed down the blindside and Paul Maxwell-Keys took route one to the try line. Milner’s conversion took the score to 20-16.
Milner then added three more points from a penalty to give his side breathing room.
There was over five minutes of stoppage time to negotiate and the home side coped with it
well to make it five victories from the last six games.
