The festive season is still in full swing at Lichfield Cathedral thanks to performances of Amahl and the Night Visitors.
The story of young Amahl and his encounter with the Three Kings has entertained children and their families’ worldwide, for over 50 years.
And on January 22 Lichfield Cathedral is presenting two performances of the chamber opera – a schools matinee at 2pm and a public evening performance at 7.30pm.
In an impoverished village, somewhere (anywhere) in Middle East, a widow struggles to make ends meet for herself and her crippled son, Amahl, aged 10. Amahl doesn’t make it easier for her with his exuberance, and vivid imagination. Typical is the winter night when he wakes her to tell that there are three kings at the door. But for once he is telling the truth – three Kings, following a prophetic star, have come seeking shelter on their journey. They are bearing gifts for a child, a very special child.
The production – directed by Glenn McKenzie with musical direction by Cathy Lamb – is suitable for all ages from age eight.
