Lichfield residents are being invited to the sceening of a film documenting the race to save an historic feature of the city’s Cathedral.
The film – The Race to Save the Herkenrode Glass – has been made by BBC historian Michael Wood and his wife Rebecca Dobbs to highlight the importance of the conservation of the glass and stonework in the Cathedral.
Designed and made in Flanders during the sixteenth century the glass panels were brought from Herkenrode Abbey to England in 1803, to escape the destruction of the Napoleonic Wars.
The short film traces the history and significance of the glass as well as the intricacies of the preservation processes for both the glass and masonry over the next five years.
The screening takes place on October 24 11am in Lichfield Cathedral. Although tickets are not required for the event, visitors are asked to confirm their attendance by emailing enquiries@lichfield-cathedral.org.
