The Conservative MP for Lichfield and Burntwood has urged voters not to let national politics cloud their judgement during the local elections.
Political commentators expect the confusion around Brexit to play a big part in deciding how voters decide in the poll on Thursday.
But Michael Fabricant has urged residents to think about issues closer to home.
“The Conservatives in Lichfield have done a fine job providing services and keeping council tax down in spite of difficult national issues.
“In the local elections people should vote on local issues.”
His comments were supported by one Conservative candidate who said the focus should be on “bins not Brexit”.
But after this was questioned by independent candidate Joanne Grange, it was also criticised by outgoing Lichfield District Council Labour group leader Sue Woodward:
