A Lichfield auctioneer is set to sell off a rare mantle frieze designed for the Houses of Parliament.
The carved oak panel is expected to sell fo up to £1,500 when it goes under the hammer on June 29.
Charles Hanson, of Hansons Auctioneers, believes the item has huge significance.
“The piece of timber is an important artefact of British social history,” said the Bargain Hunt antiques expert. “It is 19th Century carved artistry at its finest.”
Likely to have been designed for a door, the frieze is of a medieval Gothic style and features an eagle, jound and dragon.
The item is believed to have been rescued after a World War II air raid on the city of London.
“I hope it will be featured in a collection for the public to enjoy,” Charles added. “It is truly a work of art from a magnificent building central to our country.”
