Lichfield-born jockey Greville Starkey has died.
The 70-year-old, who won the Derby aboard Shirley Heights, had been battling cancer.
Starkey won nearly 2,000 races during his distinguished career.
John Dunlop – the trainer of Shirley Heights – told RTE Racing:
“He was a great jockey at his best. He will always remembered by me for winning that Derby. He was a fine rider. I am very sorry to hear the news.”
Starkey retired in 1989 after 34 years in the sport.
