LICHFIELD Hockey Club's men saw their tough start to the season continue as they went down 3-1 at University of Birmingham.

A scoreless first half saw the visitors knocking on the door but unable to make the breakthrough.

Tom Gardiner also suffered a nasty cut as he took a stick to the head in the second quarter.

Despite a more promising showing, the third quarter saw Lichfield go behind with a well-worked penalty corner.

The students doubled their lead shortly afterwards as play broke down and an unmarked player found the bottom corner.

The final quarter finally saw Lichfield get off the mark when a pinpoint drag flick from Will Davies found Matthew Cooper’s stick for a beautiful deflection.

But any hopes of a Lichfield comeback were dashed when a penalty corner beat the visiting goalkeeper.
