Lichfield’s MP has slammed plans for a Margaret Thatcher death party in the city.
Staffordshire Police confirmed that they were monitoring a group believed to be planning an event to coincide with the former Prime Minister’s funeral next week.
Officers visited the owner of a website promoting a party, but insisted that they were “not investigating any incident” in connection to a previous ‘celebration’ held by the group at a city centre pub.
However, the city’s Conservative MP has admitted he would be disgusted if such an event was to go ahead again on Wednesday (April 17).
“Any such ‘party’ would be in awful taste,” said Mr Fabricant.
“I would oppose any such ‘celebration’ in the future following Gordon Brown’s death and I certainly oppose such behaviour on the death of a great Prime Minister like Margaret Thatcher.”
Baroness Thatcher’s death has re-ignited the debate over her controversial time in charge of the country.
But Mr Fabricant believes time has proven that many of her decisions were correct, despite the renewed criticism of her role.
“You have to ask why such embittered people exist,” added Mr Fabricant. “It is because Margaret Thatcher won the battle of ideas.
“No serious Labour politician anymore calls for nationalisation, no serious Labour politician anymore calls for more power to be given to trade unions, and no serious Labour politician anymore calls for unilateral nuclear disarmament. That is all because of Margaret Thatcher who destroyed old Labour.
“So all that is left for those on the left is to make pointless gestures. In Lichfield, they will be regarded as irrelevant, childish, and wrong.”
