IT was a real game of two halves as Lichfield were defeated at Lutterworth.
The home side reached half time with a 29-0 lead and looked to be cruising to victory.
But a spirited response in the second period saw Lichfield fightback before eventually being beaten 34-28.
The opening period was dominated by the home side’s forwards with some telling defence. The Myrtle Greens, meanwhile, dropped the ball on numerous occasions – even over the try line – and also gave Lutterworth penalties and chances to kick to the corner for a series of catch, maul, drive and try efforts.
The first three tries saw hooker James Thomas grab two while prop Dan Summers also crossed the whitewash. Mitch Culpin did not have his kicking boots on and was only able to convert two tries all afternoon.
Justin Trombas and Guy Randell added further tries as Lutterworth opened up a sizeable advantage.
A reshuffle and rethink at the break saw Lichfield look like a different side, but they still found it hard to break down a determined home defence.
It took them nearly 20 minutes of the second half to register a score. Ollie Green, evading several tackles, weaved his way to the posts, before Jack Hurst soon added a second close by after repeated forward drives.
Trombas put the game beyond reach with a try for Lutterworth, but there was still time for the ever improving Lichfield side to create tries for Paul Maxwell-Keys and Ditch Burton, who were both very much at the forefront of their side’s definite second half progress.
Charlie Milner kicked four from four – and the last one guaranteed a second bonus point to ensure the city side keep in touch with the log jam of other sides in third to eighth positions in the table.
