LICHFIELD's men came out on top as they beat Hinckley Stags 15-5 in their final pre-season encounter.
The opponents, who have just been promoted to level six of the pyramid structure after winning their previous league three years on the trot, were very well organised, especially up front, and gave the Myrtle Greens's defensive system a really good test.
Lichfield had opened very brightly and went through multiple phases patiently to earn their first try, finished with some aplomb by a diving Tom Day.
With the score at 5-0 at the turnaround, a well-rehearsed move released the impressive Rhys Wynne through the midfield defence. An ankle tap stopped him scoring, but the support worked Matt Key over in the corner.
Hinckley’s try came soon after as one of their powerful drives from a five-metre line-out allowed them to dot down.
Lichfield were still finding their opponents a tough nut to crack. However, with 10 minutes to go they eventually found a way to create a clear overlap and Tyler Moseley scored easily in the left corner for a satisfying win, if not a perfect one.
Elsewhere, the city side's youthful 2nds were beaten 31-17 at Manor Park.
