POLICE will introduce measures to prevent protesters in Tamworth from covering their faces.
Activists are expected to take part in a demonstration today (12th September).
A designated area under Section 158 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026 in relation to face coverings will be in place until 6pm. It means anyone who conceals their identity will be liable to arrest.
Exemptions will apply for religious, health and work-related coverings.
The main routes inside the area include the A454 Riverdrive, Ankerdrive, Saxondrive, Fazeley Road, the A51, Offadrive, the B5493 and Tamedrive.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said:
"We will work to balance the rights of the protesters against the rights of those affected by it, which includes minimising the impact of disruption to local businesses, the community and the road network.
"We recognise that events of this nature can cause concern for people and businesses. We’re working closely with Tamworth Borough Council and partner agencies to maintain public safety and minimise disruption wherever possible.
"Our priority is public safety. The right to protest peacefully in a democracy is important, but it is also important there are consequences for those who break the law."
