Victorious Michael Fabricant admitted he was shocked by the margin of his election victory in Lichfield.
The Conservative candidate picked up 28,048 votes – over 17,000 more than nearest rival Ian Jackson who picked up 10,365 for the Liberal Democrats.
Labour’s Steve Hyden had a disappointing night after polling 10,230 votes, while UKIP’s Karen Maunder registered 2,920 votes.
But while Mr Fabricant admits that he believed he would be returning to the House of Commons, the margin of victory did surprise him.
