Midfielder Ben Jevons believes play-off hopefuls Chasetown FC have already hit their target for the season by ensuring they were not relegated.
The Scholars sit in eighth spot in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, but with games in hand on a number of the teams above them, after back-to-back wins against Frickley and Retford United.
But despite having the potential of a back-to-back promotion firmly within their grasp, Jevons admits manager Charlie Blakemore has not set a target of reaching the play-offs.
The midfielder – who scored in the 4-0 demolition of Retford – explained:
“The play-offs are in sight, but we are just trying to get as many points as we can and see where we finish. We haven’t set any targets really, but we are safe from relegation which is nice in our first season.”
Jevons has been one of the revelations of Chasetown’s season thanks to his impressive goalscoring form which has seen him net 13 times in the league.
And although his shooting boots have earned him a place as a fans’ favourite, the midfielder admits he’s getting stick in the dressing room.
He told The Lichfield Blog:
“The ball just seems to be bouncing for me at the minute and I’m loving it – I seem to be the right place right time. Jimmy Turner is calling me Frank Lampard at the minute which I hope is for my goal scoring rather than my weight!”
Chasetown will look to keep up the pressure on the play-off pack when they take on Stocksbridge Park Steels at the Scholars Ground on Saturday (April 2).
The visitors are leading the pack in the bottom half of the table, occupying 13th place on 42 points – 14 behind Blakemore’s men.
But the Scholars will not be able to take anything for granted, having been beaten 2-0 by Stocksbridge earlier in the season.
Kick-off on Saturday is at 3pm.
