AN MP has called for urgent action to protect small businesses from misconduct by energy providers.
Sarah Edwards – whose Tamworth constituency covers Shenstone, Fazeley, Stonnall and Whittington – led a debate in Parliament on the issue.
She highlighted a cafe which was nearly forced to close after being incorrectly billed.
The Labour MP told her parliamentary colleagues that a stronger regulatory framework and greater accountability was needed.
She said:
“The debate was about standing up for the small businesses that are the backbone of our local economies.
“The case I spoke about was outrageous – a trusted cafe almost shut down overnight due to a £10,000 bill that was later found to be incorrect.
“But it’s not just one business. I’ve heard from many others facing similar injustices across the country.
“Energy companies must not be allowed to operate with impunity. We need proper oversight, meaningful fines and a commitment to fair and transparent billing.”
The cafe was visited by debt collectors and threatened with closure until an intervention by Ms Edwards and a ruling by the energy ombudsman, which eventually found the business was actually owned money by the supplier.
But compensation of just £200 was awarded.
During the debate the Labour MP also highlighted alarming statistics showing that, despite widespread complaints, only one case in the last six months resulted in the maximum £10,000 compensation from the energy ombudsman.
She said:
“This is about more than just one case – it’s about a culture of unregulated behaviour that is pushing businesses to the brink.
“These are people who pay their bills in good faith, only to be punished for the failings of huge corporations.
“The Government must act to protect small businesses from this kind of abuse.”
