A policeman has been seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle while pursuing a suspect near Lichfield.
The incident happened at around 6.15pm yesterday (November 29) when the officer attempted to stop a HGV on the A5.
Following a short pursuit between Wall Island and Weeford Island, the lorry stopped and a foot chase began. The driver then threatened the policeman with a fallen tree branch, causing him to step backwards where he was hit by a passing vehicle.
The suspect then pulled a driver from a Ford Fiesta that was waiting in traffic before getting away in the car, which was later found abandoned near a social club in Pelsall.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: “The police officer has been taken to Hospital with suspected serious leg and chest injuries.
“His family have been taken to hospital and colleagues are providing support to them.
“The vehicles involved, including the silver Ford Fiesta stolen by the suspect to leave the scene have been recovered and are undergoing a forensic examination.
“The suspect is a white male, slim build around 6ft tall and was wearing dark clothing.”
