Stand-in Chasetown FC skipper Dave Egan has promised to play his part in the club’s chase for the title – despite admitting he didn’t expect to get much of a look-in this season.
Egan initially returned to the club to build up his fitness after a self-imposed exile from the game during the summer.
But boss Charlie Blakemore has turned to a player he knows well – and even handed him the armband in the absence of the injured Richard Teesdale.
And now Egan is keen to repay the manager’s faith. He added:
“I phoned Charlie in July having not played for three years just to see if he minded me coming training. I thought it would help me get fit for my boxing and that I might be able to get a few games for the reserves, but he threw me straight in.
“That was a big surprise and I never imaged I would play so many games as I have.”
Despite his shock, Egan has not looked back and played his part in the club’s weekend win over Grantham Town.
And now he is determined to use his leadership skills to help fire the Scholars up among the title-chasing pack – continuing tonight (November 3) against Leek Town.
He said:
“Saturday was a great win, but it would be nice to put a good run together now. If we go six or seven games winning then we’ll find ourselves a few points clear at the top, such is the tightness of this league.
“Against Grantham we got back to winning our battles. We worked our socks of and were winning first and second balls. Then when we got it we tried to play a bit.Hopefully we’ll do this again against Leek.
“It’s not possible to just play pretty football every single game. You’ve got to earn the right first. But if we do this I’m sure we’ll win the league this season.”
