THREE poplar trees are being felled in Beacon Park after an assessment found they could pose a danger to the public.
It follows an assessment from a tree surgeon and arboriculturist who found that they were unpredictably shedding large branches.
Believed to have been planted in the 1960s and located near to Morrisons and Greenhough Road, the trees are close to paths and a car park and therefore are being chopped down.
Cllr Phil Whitehouse, cabinet member for operational services, parks and waste at Lichfield District Council, said:
“It is very regrettable when we must lose mature trees, but the safety of our park visitors is our top priority.
“Our trees are regularly inspected and when we receive professional advice we must act when there’s a real risk to the public.
“We will carry out replanting in the autumn when the conditions are right to ensure we add back the lost trees into the park.”
Other nearby poplars are also due to be examined to determine whether further removals are needed.
