The Lichfield venue had seen five years of fundraising and restoration before it opened its doors to the public in 1999.

To mark the anniversary, a series of events are taking place, including a gala dinner at Lichfield Guildhall. Historian and TV presenter Adam Hart-Davis will be the speaker for the evening on April 9, with family descendant Christopher Darwin leading a fundraising auction afterwards.

Tickets are £35 and include a three course meal.

The focus will turn back to Erasmus Darwin House on April 12 when a celebration day features games and crafts for children.

Alison Wallis, the museum’s curator, said: “We are all very excited to be celebrating 15 years of the museum. It’s been hard keeping up with the other excellent heritage sites in Lichfield but, by working in partnership, I think we have cemented our place in the city and can confidently say we’re here to stay!”

Other events in April include an interactive performance by the Lunar Men, evening talks, tours of Darwin House cellars and the Cathedral Close and competitions. For full details visit www.erasmusdarwin.org.
