Historic footage of 1946 Lichfield train crash released

An historic news report about a 1946 rail crash in Lichfield has been made available on YouTube.

The footage is one of 85,000 historic films uploaded by British Pathe.

The crash at Lichfield Trent Valley on New Year’s Day 1946 killed 20 people.

A fish train travelling from Fleetwood to London collided with a passenger service travelling between Stafford and Nuneaton.

A points failure was blamed for the crash, with the official report recommending that changes were made across the network to prevent any similar accidents elsewhere.
