Lichfield’s multi million pound southern bypass is set to open to traffic.
The £2.1m scheme will link the A461 Walsall Road through Friary Roundabout on the Birmingham Road in order to serve the Darwin Park housing estate.
The junction with Clay Pit Lane and Fosseway Lane will also be re-opened at the same time as the bypass.
County councillor Mike Maryon, Cabinet member for Highways, will be unveiling a commemorative plaque on Monday (February 8), with traffic free to use the road on Wednesday.
The nameplate will be attached to Sandfields Railway Bridge which has been built on the line of the mothballed Lichfield to Walsall freight railway line. The bridge was requested and approved by Network Rail.
Cllr Maryon said:
“This historic city has benefited from a wave of new development in recent years which has brought with it the chance to boost the existing infrastructure and to create new infrastructure, including the Lichfield Southern Bypass, to support this growth. It will ease the flow of traffic in and around the city for generations to come.”
Local county councillor Terry Finn added:
“The Lichfield Southern Bypass is a major scheme which will have a really positive impact on reducing congestion by linking the Darwin Park housing estate with other parts of the area. I would like to thank the people of Lichfield for their patience while this important work has been carried out.”
