A Burntwood man has discovered the largest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in Britain.
Fifty-five-year-old Terry Herbert made the discovery at an undisclosed location in Staffordshire.
The metal detectorist unearthed 2.5kg of silver and 5kg of gold in the field of a farmer friend.
Mr Herbert said:
“This is what metal detectorists dream of, finding stuff like this. But the vast amount there is is just unbelievable.”
A number of the finds – which are currently being held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery – are believed to have a warfare significance.
Authorities have not revealed the exact site of the discovery and it is not yet known it is linked to an archaeological survey carried out recently in Hammerwich which saw police land search teams involved after metal objects and bone were discovered.

This is fantastic! Apparently its a find on a par with Sutton Hoo in terms of historic significance.
This is far too important to let it be swanned off to London – we should build a museum for this where it was found on the edge of our very own Lichfield!
