In match that improved as the night went on, Chasetown secured a place in the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy with a 3-1 success over Sheffield FC in their replay.

The sides cancelled each other out in the first half, but the Scholars showed more and more pace as the match progressed and worked hard throughout the second period to score a fine win.

A fairly even start saw Mark Branch head away a sixth-minute cross from Matthew Roney, while Ben Jevons found the first break for the hosts from a tight angle on the right but the ball hit the side netting.

Ryan Price had to be alert in the tenth minute to produce a pair of fine saves from Chris Adams, but the pace was slower than normally enjoyed in the wet and slippery conditions.

Saturday scorer Brian Cusworth went close on 26 minutes as both sides struggled slightly to create chances, before Grant Ryan missed a clear chance to put the Scholars ahead four minutes later, firing wide while in space after some good work from the midfield.  Matty Cohen also looked potent in defence for the Chase, preventing Cusworth’s cross from reaching its target on 33 minutes.

The Scholars began to apply more pressure over the last ten minutes before the break, the Branch brothers displaying their usual speed down the wings, but it was Sheffield who nearly found a breakthrough courtesy of Adams on 42 minutes, his shot rolling wide of the far post.

Chasetown opened the second half in fine style, a Mark Branch corner meeting Ben Jevons at the near post and he was able to head the ball home and put the hosts in front.

Ryan had a great chance to make it two three minutes later but found only the side netting, and on 59 minutes Sheffield were level as Adams showed great pace down the left to beat two defenders before unleashing his shot across Price and into the back of the net.

Kyle Clancy palmed down a 20-yard shot from Ryan, but on 66 minutes the Scholars were back in front as a free kick from Mark Branch found Richard Teesdale and the skipper’s header bounced beyond Clancy and into the corner.

Gary Birch almost made it three on 73 minutes but his header from a Mark Branch corner bounced off the crossbar, while the Branch brothers tried to combine but Clancy gathered John’s cross before Mark could get his head to it.

Sheffield tried hard to fight back, the Scholars defence doing well during an 87th-minute goalmouth scramble with the tension mounting and the crowd in fine voice, but with two minutes to go Ryan finally found the target after rounding Clancy to stab a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net to put the lid on it for the hosts.

In stoppage time Dave Egan was denied by a diving Clancy but the Scholars were safe for victory and will go on to visit Mickleover Sports in the next round.

Before that, however, the side will look forward to a trip to Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday (October 23), 3pm kick-off.
