An historic Lichfield pub is set to return to its roots.
Joule’s Brewery is hoping to refurbish Samuels on Market Street and reopen it as The Angel Inn – the pub’s original name.
It has submitted a planning application for the changes which are hoped to rebrand the venue as “traditional inn retailing real ale”.
A spokesperson said the company hoped to restore the building to its former glory: “The building is an important survivor of a small parlour pub.
“It originates from circa 1750 and would have been most likely a beer house serving the market traders.
“In recent years the internal body of the pub has been removed and some low grade, poor quality refurbishments have been carried out.”
Joule’s Brewery – who were behind the transformation of the Duke of York in Lichfield city centre – is also hoping to attract a new clientele to the business.
A spokesperson added: “The intention is to refurbish the pub into a higher quality pub that will specialise in local ales and attract a broader community to use the pub.
“Over the past 20 years, Samuels has traded as a price-orientated, low quality pub. The intention of the new owners is to trade as a broader mid-market pub specialising in local and high quality ales as well as cafe style food, coffee and craft beer.”
