Volunteers from Burntwood have helped renovate a house for young mums.
A group from npower’s offices in the town came together to lend a hand at St Johns’s Presbytery in Tamworth.
The building had previously been used for priests, but the local church was keen to lease the site to a community cause – and Homestart won the lease and are now hoping to create supported living accomodation for homeless 16 and 17-year-old mums and their babies.
Dawn Candy, Senior Coordinator at Homestart, said: “St John’s Presbytery is a beautiful, large, traditional property with fantastic period features but it needed extensive modernisation to make it fit for the new purpose.
“We have had approximately 70 volunteers who have given their time to be a part of this project and being able to utilise npower’s expertise with the gas and electric aspects of the refurbishment has been a real help. .
The work undertaken by the npower volunteers saw them ensure that the boiler, plumbing and electrics of the building were all safe and fit for purpose.
Team leader Dave Houghton explained: “Ordinarily the team would be working on different properties so to have us all working together provided great team camaraderie.
“We have all been really heartened by the project and the work that Homestart do, so we were motivated to work flat out to get as much done as possible.”
