A BY-ELECTION candidate has called for more action to transform a local pond after it was blighted by pollution.
Bown Pond, in Fradley has now recovered from the incident that left it covered with green slime and left wildlife dead.
But Glen Bown, who will represent Labour at the Alrewas and Fradley ward by-election for a seat a Lichfield District Council, said more could be done to transform it into a “community asset for all”.
He said:
“It’s great that the pond has recovered from pollution incidents. They mustn’t be allowed to happen again though.
“But we now have a lovely pond that’s behind fences, with no public access and not being what it could be for Fradley – a lovely community amenity.
“If I’m elected to Lichfield District Council, I’ll campaign to bring everyone together – the Environment Agency, the estate developers, the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and Lichfield District Council – to create accessible paths, fishing facilities, proper water safety equipment and an area that the whole community can enjoy safely – in line with local residents’ wishes.”
The by-election has been called following the resignation of former council leader Mike Wilcox for “personal reasons”.
Mr Bown said he was hoping residents would give him the chance to represent them.
“People in Fradley want to use Bown Pond, just as people in Alrewas want a railway station.
“Being a councillor is all about working with partners to bring changes for the community’s benefit – and turning this pond into a welcoming asset that people can enjoy is something I’d like to help make happen.”
