Parents across Lichfield and Burntwood are being urged to get their children to walk to school.
As well as promoting health, Staffordshire County Council says it hopes taking cars off the road during Walk to School Month could also cut congestion.
Cllr Mark Deaville, Cabinet Support Member for transport and highways, said: “Arriving at school on foot or two wheels has so many benefits – not only does it help to keep parents and children fit and healthy, it can also save families up to £400 per year on car costs.
“Walking also helps to ease congestion on our busy roads and make them safer for pedestrians.”
Figures reveal that just 46% of children walk to school, while campaigners Living Streets say research shows pupils who walk are more alert in the classroom.
Cllr Deaville insisted that those who live too far away from the gates to walk direct can still take action.
“We want to encourage people to Have fun and leave the stress of driving behind them,” he said. “Even if you live too far away from the school to walk all of the way you can park and stride by walking part of the way.
“we’re always looking for volunteers for our walking buses too, so if you think you could help out then please get in touch with your local school.”
