Councillor appeals for information after rise in fly-tipping across Lichfield and Burntwood

Councillors are calling on residents to help catch fly-tippers after a spate of incidents over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Councillors are calling on residents to help catch fly-tippers after a spate of incidents over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A pile of waste was removed from Coppice Lane at Muckley Corner, while wood and black bin bags were among the items dumped on Market Lane in Wall the following day.

Bank Holiday Monday saw calls to furniture blocking the lane at Hobstone Hill in Chorley.

Rubbish has also recently been dumped at Barracks Lane off the A5 and Crane Brook Lane in Lower Stonnall, while large piles of conifer cuttings were dumped twice at Little Pipe Lane in Burntwood, and also at Coulter Lane in Burntwood and Old Burton Road in Lichfield.

Councillor Iain Eadie, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet member for waste services, said: “Fly-tipping is a criminal offence that is both unsightly and expensive to clear up.

“We’re encouraging anyone that may have seen any of these crimes being committed to report anything they saw, so we can investigate and prosecute those responsible.

“We’re also taking this opportunity to remind local residents and businesses that they need to check the documentation of where any contractors they use intend to dispose of their waste. This is because the responsibility or ‘duty of care’ is on the employer of the contractor, so you could be fined if someone you use to do your gardening or do a house clearance, then goes on to illegally dump that waste.”

People can report fly-tipping by calling 01543 308999 or visiting www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/reportit.
