A COUNCILLOR has hailed the success of markets in Lichfield – and says plans are being put in place to build on them even further.
Lichfield City Council said the Friday and Saturday events were currently operating at full capacity, while Tuesdays are also growing with three new traders recently taking up pitches.
Cllr James Blackman, Labour representative for Leomansley ward, said his party had sought to enhance the markets after taking control of the city centre, adding that they were no longer running at a loss.
He said:
"Lichfield's markets are doing extremely well – and that success is not something we should take for granted.
"It is built on the loyalty of our existing traders, many of whom turn up week after week in all weather conditions, as well as the hard work of the council officers who manage, support and promote the markets.
"Our traders provide residents and visitors with a wide variety of products, services and food, while also contributing to the atmosphere and character of the city centre.
"The market is an important part of Lichfield's identity, the local economy and the community."
As well as regular traders, the market also has a list of casual traders to cover pitches on an ad-hoc basis where necessary.
A new website has also been launched to showcase upcoming events, while an antiques market has also taken place as the city council looks to expand the offering.
Cllr Blackman said:
"We want to build on the success of the traditional markets while also introducing new ideas that attract different audiences into the city.
"A young traders market could give the next generation of entrepreneurs an opportunity to test their ideas, meet customers and gain valuable experience.
"We are also looking at other types of markets and events that will complement the existing offer rather than compete with it.
"Most importantly, we want residents to recognise how valuable the market is. Supporting them means supporting independent traders, encouraging people to shop locally and helping to maintain a busy and welcoming city centre.
"The markets are doing well, but their continued success depends on people using them. I would encourage residents to visit, speak to the traders and discover the variety available in the heart of Lichfield."
