A COUNCILLOR has demanded “urgent action” to move forward with a long-awaited health centre in Burntwood.

The facility has been earmarked for land at Cherry Close where the former Burntwood Youth Centre once stood.

But despite the site being cleared and a temporary health and wellbeing centre at the neighbouring leisure centre being shut, work has yet to start.

Cllr Robin Hall, Reform UK member for Burntwood South, raised the delays at a meeting of Staffordshire County Council.

He said:

“Residents in Burntwood have waited far too long for these essential health facilities.

“I raised this issue at full council because it’s time we cut through the delays and gave the community clarity on when they can expect construction to begin”.

Staffordshire County Council has confirmed that a hybrid planning application is being prepared, with detailed proposals for the health centre and outline proposals for the remainder of the site.

Cllr Hall said he was pleased to hear that regular meetings were taking place between council officers and health partners, including the Integrated Care Board and Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust to progress the project.

But he has called for a “clear timeline and action plan”.

Cllr Hall added:

“I welcome the fact that senior officers and cabinet members are now giving this project renewed attention.

“But the people of Burntwood don’t just want meetings they need real movement, a shovel ready plan, and delivery.”

Cllr Ian Cooper leader of the county council, said:

“I’m delighted that Cllr Hall has raised this to the highest level and I will support him in any way I can.

“For over ten years the previous administration have not prioritised the health of the Burntwood community.”
