Controversial plans to house 270,000 broiler chickens in sheds near Lichfield are set to be discussed by councillors.
A petition against the creation of six new buildings on land off Little Hay Lane in Weeford has gathered more than 850 signatures.
Each unit – measuring 97.5m by 22.55m – would house 45,000 chickens if the scheme was given the go-ahead.
But Katie Ferneyhough, who started the petition said so many animals in so few sheds was “outrageous”.
She added: “The broiler hens live only 37 days and never see the sun.
“I own chickens and they are amazing animals. People do not realise the damage this will do.
“We should not be treating animals this way for our own food production.”
But a report to meeting of Lichfield District Council’s planning committee tonight (August 11) will recommend approval of the scheme, insisting the ethical issues surrounding the rearing of broiler chickens should not impact on the planning process.
Use of Green Belt land
Local residents had also questioned the use of Green Belt land. However, the council officers report suggested the use met guidelines.
“Whilst I note the comments received that the broiler farm is a commercial operation and the buildings are akin to industrial units, it is my view that the development is for agricultural purposes, despite its intensive use and scale.
“It is therefore appropriate development in the Green Belt.
“The ethical or moral values of the type of intensive farming proposed cannot be material to the determination of the planning application.
“Animal welfare, whilst clearly an important matter, is subject to other checks separate to the planning legislation.”
