A CREATIVE group in Burntwood is aiming to help people improve their mental health.

Artful Healing has been set up by Emmie Tapper and will take place at Burntwood Library from 10.30am to 12.30pm on the second Saturday of each month.

Each session sees different art materials used to paint, draw or sew in order help people “de-stress”.

Emmie said her own personal journey had inspired her to launch the group:

“Art is a way we can escape from any strains and pressures during our busy lives. We can also express our true emotions and feelings through art too.

“I, like many others in England, struggle with mental health, so this is very important to me.

“In 2020, I was a 19-year-old student nurse working on a COVID-19 ward after I opted in to support the workforce, working as a clinical support worker and nursing associate.

“I have since qualified as a nurse, now working as an urgent response nurse in my community. But I had to take some time away from work due to stress and anxiety, which I am not ashamed to admit.

“Self-care has taught me to not only look within, but to focus on my environment and others around me. I have personally participated in art-focused clubs, but the demographic has not always reached individuals like myself.”

Artful Healing has been designed for people aged between 18 and 50.

Emmie added:

“The art group is designed to bring people together to relax and create in a safe, welcoming environment.

“I want to encourage creative expression through participants’ troubles and bring like-minded individuals together to remind them they are not alone. “
